7 UMP subjects listed in world’s ranking

A total of seven subjects of Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) joined the list of world’s elite universities when listed in the recently published QS World University Rankings by Subjects 2020.

The listed subjects are Engineering and Technology (386), Chemical Engineering (151–200), Electrical and Electronics Engineering (401–450), Mechanical, Aeronautical and Manufacturing Engineering (351–400), Pure Science (Chemistry) (451–500), Pure Science (Material Science) (351–400) and Social Sciences and Management (Business and Management Studies) (451–500).

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic & International), Professor Ts. Dr. Mohd. Rosli Hainin said that all the subjects were listed based on the performance of four indicators, namely academic reputation, employer reputation, the number of indexed articles and the H index that were extracted from Scopus.

“Overall, UMP manifests a great achievement in terms of employer reputation and the Scopus H index, along with the accomplishment of the lecturers in publishing quality research and being referred to internationally,” he said.

This achievement inspires UMP students to share their sentiments.

According to the President of the Students’ Representative Council (MPP) 2019/2020,  Mohd Fitri Zulkaffli from the Faculty of Computing, being listed in the QS World University Rankings by Subject this year proves that this university is on the right track in realising its vision to be the best technical university by 2050.

“This is a sweet success when UMP is now at the 134th spot in Asia (QS University Rankings Asia 2020) and the 751–800 spot in the world (QS World University Rankings 2020).

“As the 5-star rating university (QS Stars University Ratings), the quality of academic and teaching and learning sessions is the utmost focus given by the university in the effort to ensure that the UMP graduates remain relevant and meet the industrial needs,” he said.

As a UMP student, he is very proud of the achievements accomplished by the university.

“UMP graduates will gain the benefits of this rating, especially when they enter the market because the branding of UMP as the best technical university will bring them a good reputation,” he said.

Meanwhile, Ahmad Rifqi Mohd. Jerome Rinjes, the Vice President (Communications and Corporate) of MPP 2019/2020 from the College of Engineering, also felt proud with all the subjects listed in the QS World University Rankings by Subject.
“This achievement has convinced me to introduce myself as a UMP student to the global public to gain knowledge and collaborate.

“Additionally, this ranking will boost the spirit of UMP students to contribute to more future achievements.

“I hope UMP will continue to strive for success, especially in producing holistic graduates,” he said.

For Yasmin Izureen Ibrahim from the Faculty of Industrial Sciences & Technology (FSTI), the excellence and greatness of UMP are increasingly evident in public.

“This success is undeniably a proud moment for all UMP associates who work together to bring UMP to the international level.

“UMP is undoubtedly the best choice to obtain your diploma or degree, or even at a higher level.

“UMP is also a great platform for students to develop their potential in terms of communication, leadership and soft skills so that they will be more competitive and in a class of its own,” she said.

She also believes that with this rating is an additional credit to showcase and introduce competent UMP graduates in various sectors and industries, thus convince employers to engage them.

Also sharing the success was a student from the Department of Chemical Engineering, College of Engineering, Amyleen Barnabas Alex.

She mentioned that this success has a positive impact on herself and all UMP denizens.

She hopes that UMP will continue to carve its name in the whole country and at the international level with the concerted effort from the university.

Ong Voon Chyi from the same department also congratulated all UMP associates.

“I am proud to get the opportunity to study at an internationally-recognised university.

“UMP does focus on students achievement, not only academically but also physically and mentally.

“May UMP can realise its vision and mission in maximising the potential of students to benefit the community.

“This effort will make UMP more renowned locally and internationally,” she said.

UMP launches 4 books at BBW

A travelogue about the journey of Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) students in building their business to success entitled ‘Saya Datang, Saya Lihat, Saya Takluk’ (I Come, I See, I Conquer) written by students of Entrepreneurship programme and the Entrepreneurship Centre was launched on 5 March 2020.

Four UMP books were launched during the Big Bad Wolf (BBW) Sale on 28 February until 9 March 2020 at the Sports Complex, UMP Gambang.

A book entitled ‘Achtung, Achso, Viel Spass!!’ is written by a UMP lecturer, Associate Professor Ir. Dr. Mohamad Rizza Othman and Mardhiyah Mat Hussin, featuring their bittersweet experiences in Germany.

‘Memimpin Yang Terpimpin’ regarding the model of talent and leadership for public universities is written by a lecturer from the Faculty of Industrial Management, Dr. Mohamad Rozi Hassan and Ismie Roha Mohamed Jais. Meanwhile, ‘Wonder of Oud’ is written by Dr. Puteri Fadzline Muhammad Tamyez, Dr. Fazeeda Mohamad, Associate Professor Dr. Cheng Jack Kie and Norul Amalina Sabri.

The event was officiated by the Director of Entrepreneurship Centre, Associate Professor Ts. Dr. Hadi Manap and the President of the Malaysian Book Publishers Association (MABOPA).

Also present were the Senior Manager at the Office of the Vice-Chancellor, Zainuddin Mat Husin, the Senior Publication Officer of SUARA UMP (formerly known as UMP Press), Muhammad Azli Shukri and Raymond Yeo Chin Hean from Kualiti Books Sdn. Bhd.

Big Bad Wolf (BBW) Sale saw a total of 250,000 books with attractive discounts and sold at as low as.

According to Muhammad Azli, the organisation of BBW 2020 was the second time after an overwhelming response last year.

“The response from the first day has been very encouraging when visitors began to pour in as early as 9.00 am.,” he said.

He hopes that the community can grab the chances to visit this sale with families as there are many book selections for children and adults with reasonable discounts.

Besides, there were Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) activities with the students from the Faculty of Mechanical and Automotive Engineering Technology and the presence of animation icons such as Ejen Ali and Boboiboy.

Engineering students involved with printing business on campus

Recognizing the interest of university students in sports apparel, this kind of idea gave the idea of Civil Engineering Technology student, Pan Chuan Sin, 24, a venture into the field of sports apparel printing business.
 
He started the printing business with a focus on sports apparel printing services including Jersey, Jersey Full Set with Pan, Muslimah Long Sleeve, Plain T, Sports Polo T, and Sport Tech.

Pan also offers custom-made clothing design services that customers want at a reasonable price.

Prices range from RM10 to RM50 depending on quantity, design, and materials.

In addition, Pan also runs a sub-contract event printing business for printing materials such as banners, bunting, flyers, artcard printing for program use at UMP.

According to Pan, the prices offered are much cheaper and affordable compared to the print shops in Kuantan.

“In addition, they are able to quickly complete their assignments at the last minute according to customer needs.

"Although tied to the busy schedule on campus, it is not a hindrance for Pan to venture into the business as he can gain valuable experience while also relying on earning extra income to cover his own expenses without burdening his family.

“Students now need to gain additional skills like the knowledge that can be applied along with the skills acquired during their university studies.

"Instead of relying solely on academic knowledge, students also need to be smart in digging into the beginning stages of business," he said.

He said he had always been interested in this business and wanted to learn to be independent without expecting his family and now he could earn up to RM 2,000 a month.

“The biggest challenge is to market the product to the consumer which takes a long time to study and implement it as well as strong finances.

However, the UMP Entrepreneurship Center provides a lot of advice and guidance especially in business plan management as well as opening up space for students to market their products,” said Terengganu's teaser.
 
He also intends to open full-time and part-time jobs to UMP students.

UMP alumni builts the business empire of Caliphs Technology PLT

Never thought of owning a company. When asked when he was younger, Abang Fairul Syarmil Abang Mohd dreamed of becoming a pilot, but who would have thought that his studies in Computer Science at Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) would allow him the opportunity to build his business empire, Caliphs Technology PLT.

Born in Sibu, Sarawak, she was nominated as a finalist for the Bumiputera Entrepreneur Scheme (SUPERB) 2014, organized by TERAJU under the Prime Minister's Department.

He is a UMP alumnus having studied in the Diploma in Computer Science in 2009 before pursuing a Bachelor of Computer Science in 2011.
 
Looking back on his career path, Abang Fairul Syarmil served as a Software Engineer for two years at an Oil & Gas Consultant company, EJ Joint Venture Sdn. Bhd. (EJJV) in the capital city of Kuala Lumpur.
 
EJJV was the same company when he underwent industrial training before being absorbed to serve there.

He then served as the Senior Executive of Information Technology at the University of Technology College of Sarawak (UCTS) for six years before deciding to open his own company.
 
According to him, rapid technological advancements coupled with the 'world at the fingertips' have helped entrepreneurs promote and sell products more easily and quickly.
 
“In line with this development, Caliph Technology PLT is seen as a digitizing agent for an organization that offers software development, mobile applications, and interactive media.
 
"We are also developing software that can be customized to work for an organization in line with the fast-paced digital world and entrepreneurs see this as a stepping stone in targeting their product sales," he said.

For Abang Fairul, campus life has provided him with a great deal of experience especially in involvement in club activities or association programs.
 
He advised graduates to continue to gain experience and to dare to try.
 
Besides, Caliphs Technology PLT, which has been active since last year, now operates ten corporate websites, among its corporate entities including Amanah Raya Berhad, which is the largest customer of its company to date.
