UMP continued to be the best in Financial Management

Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) will continue to create work culture based on best practice to increase efficiency in financial management.

Other than that, the culture to correct (weaknesses) the norm and to norm (practice) the correct can improve the Bursary financial management level to greater quality, integrity and highly innovative that are customer friendly.

This effort in improving effectiveness and efficiency of UMP staff to continue their effort to increase their achievement momentum based on their field of work and responsibilities at their respective department. 

UMP was awarded 5 star rating in Financial Management Auditing UMP Accountability Index based on Financial Management Auditing Accountability Index (AI) carried out every two years by the National Audit Department. 

This audit is aim to ease the measurement of quality objectively in the financial management for government agencies including the public universities as the federal statutory body.

It is also in line with the RMK-9’s core in strengthening institutions’ ability and implementation by creating a KPI to increase Public Service Delivery System.

Attending to deliver the certificate to the Vice-Chancellor of UMP, Professor Ir. Dr. Wan Azhar Wan Yusoff is the Director of Pahang State Audit, Zulkifli Tungal on 10th October 2019 at the Banquet Hall, Tun Abdul Razak Chancellery, UMP Pekan.

Also present Vice-Director, Pahang State Audit, Azura Wani Amir Rashid, Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation), Professor Dr. Kamal Zuhairi Zamli and Chief Financial Officer who is also UMP Bursar, Zainuddin Othman.

According to Professor Ir. Dr. Wan Azhar, this star or AI rating was awarded based on the level of compliance of the financial rules in regards to management control, budget, receipts, expenses, the management of group trust funds or trust accounts and deposits as well as assets, inventories and stores.

“In our effort to maintain 5 star rating in this auditing, UMP always carried out an internal control to ensure that the listed control scopes are complied with.”

“Apart from that, UMP has held workshops for staffs to ensure UMP is always adopting the latest accounting standards.” 

“Besides that, the ability to generate excellence based on consistence performance and positive attributes are the essential prerequisites to make UMP as a glorious university through UMP Strategic Plan 2021-2025 that will be designed soon,” he said.

Official Launching of UMP Confucius Institute

The launching of Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) Confucius Institute (CI) reflected the university’s serious effort in providing education and training in technical and vocational (TVET) in a Mandarin learning setting.

CI’s role is not only limited as a Mandarin language institute but also one that provides the syllabus to teach and learn the language for TVET.

By being graduates who can speak several languages, this will give them added values and better prospects of being hired.

The institute was officially launched by Education Ministry’s Policy Planning and Coordination Division Secretary, Normah Osman at UMP Pekan on October 14, 2019.

Also present were UMP Board of Directors’ Chairman, Dato’ Sri Ibrahim Ahmad, UMP Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ir. Dr. Wan Azhar Wan Yusoff, People’s Republic of China Embassy Cultural Director in Malaysia, Feng Jun, Hebei University Vice-President, Professor Dr. Shen Shigang, China’s Confucius Institute Director, Professor Gui Fuliang and UMP Confucius Institute Director, Yong Ying Mei. 

According to Professor Ir. Dr. Wan Azhar, the institute would provide the internationally-certified Mandarin-Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) fluency test to all Malaysians and training services to teachers.

“It would also serve as a research centre for teaching materials”, he added.

He also said UMP had set up a Mandarin Language and Culture Centre (MLCC) eight years ago and organised various Mandarin courses and Chinese cultural activities for UMP staff and local community including government agencies, private sector and industries so much so that it had become a major reference point on matters related to Mandarin language and Chinese culture in the East Coast.

On the support given by the Education Ministry, Confucius Institute Headquarter (Hanban) and Hebei University on the establishment of UMP CI, Professor Ir. Dr. Wan Azhar said it was indeed a meaningful recognition to all of the university staff.

“This would further enhance efforts taken in expanding potential international cooperation, with UMP CI continue to remain relevant and provide added values to students and others as well,” he added.

He said UMP CI would also play a role as a service provider for exchange student programme to universities in China, a platform to provide them the exposure and experience in culture and daily living practices as students in a foreign country and the opportunity to get involve in various activities with locals.
 
Feng Jun also said there were 530 CIs in 155 countries and regions in the world including Malaysia with the first CI established in Universiti Malaya (UM) which was now already into its tenth year.

He said they were confident that with the good ties enjoyed by China and Malaysia, it would bring about mutual benefits in the fields of education and culture, especially so with the year 2020 to be announced as the Tourism and Cultural Year in China.

Normah, in her speech, said the ministry truly welcomed efforts taken by UMP and Hebei University in setting up the Confucius Institute as it would give more added values to the university, its community as well as the society.

She hoped that CI, being a centre of knowledge, would be extensively presented so its importance would be widely known especially among students and the people.

She added that this could be implemented by organising programmes such as cultural exchange activities for these initiatives would not only strengthen knowledge in the fields of science and technology but could also help generate economic activities between the two countries.

“I believe UMP, being a technical university, will be able to create opportunities from the establishment of this institute through sharing of technical expertise and transfer of technology, knowledge, development and research, as well as commercialisation of products that will benefit both countries.

“This will also make Malaysia an international education hub and so, more efforts should be taken to boost student and staff mobility programme,” she said.

Normah said there were three other CIs in Malaysia - UM, Segi University and Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS).

UMP also organised the Malaysia-China Cultural and Arts Festival involving students from Hebei University who presented various performances showcasing the Chinese heritage such as the Chinese calligraphy and paintings, a lion dance and martial arts – Taichi and Wushu.

A forum was also held that discussed about the many aspects in educational and cultural exchange activities.

CAM’s Open Day - The best platform to guide students in their academic matters

Centre for Academic Management (CAM) Open Days was successfully held in both campus Pekan and Gambang on 4 and 5 October 2019. 

It is seen as the best platform for the students to know and to get advice on the services offered for them throughout their duration of studies in this university. 

Director, Centre for Academic Management (CAM), Associate Profesor Dr. Mohd Shahrir Mohd Sani said, main objective of this initiative is to deliver the best academic management service to all universities’s stakeholders in line with UMP’s vision and mission. 

“The organization of this programme is significant with the latest updates in new academic system thus becoming the reference centre in undergraduates academic management. 

“With the theme ‘Togetherness #WeCare’, it also brings together the involvement of those responsible for academic support services.

“Number of activities were planned for students in this open day, including Academic Briefing, GPA/CGPA Calculation Clinic, Direct Entry Briefing and also audition to become UMP TV newscaster. UMP TV is a medium in which latest news on campus development is conveyed,” he elaborates further. 

Associate Professor Dr. Mohd Shahrir Mohd Sani was present to launch the Pre Amour (pre-loved) Project, a corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme targeting UMP students with financial difficulties. 

He added, Pre Amour Project was inspired from the ‘Gerobok Rezeki’ Project, in which one dedicated corner were set up and stuffed with pre-loved items such as clothes, scarves, bags and shoes for students to choose and bring home for free. 

This project is also a continuation of MyGift UMP programme that is being actively pursued throughout the year in an effort to assist UMP students and the local community.
 
Students from Faculty of Industrial Management, Siti Nabirah Amran, 22, said that this programme has been a great benefit to the students especially to learn the facilities, roles and functions of each departments in UMP. For example, the function of Centre of Instructional Resources & e-Learning (CIReL) in offering online education through the Global Classroom Lecture initiative.

Other than CAM, other departments participated in this open day were Centre for Marketing & Academic Admission, Office of the Vice-Chancellor (PNC), Student Affairs & Alumni Department (JHEPA), Counselling Unit, Bursary, Institute of Post Graduates Studies (IPS), Centre for International Relations and Information, Communication & Technology Centre (ICT).

MyGift volunteers distribute nasi lemak for breakfast

Starting 1 October 2019, a total of 400 packs of nasi lemak were distributed simultaneously at both campuses to ease the burden of the students of Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) before starting their early morning classes.

As early as 8.00 am, MyGift volunteers began distributing free nasi lemak to the students at various spots including bus stops and the Faculty of Mechanical and Automotive Engineering in Pekan, and Block W in Gambang.

MyGift UMP officer Mohd Jamil Mohd Jaafar said the program, called MyNasi Lemak, was one of the MyGift initiatives to encourage students to eat breakfast before starting classes.

“The program will be implemented continuously until December this year. 

“The students appreciate this initiative, which is aimed at helping students to get food,” he said.

UMP introduced the MyGift program as an effort to raise donations from all parties to provide endowments for academic sponsorships and infrastructure facilities for the students, or even to nurture the spirit of helping those in need.

The MyGift program is also introduced to facilitate the associates and alumni, as well as the public, especially the industries, to contribute to the university's endowment fund.

UMP also welcomes contributions from all parties including UMP associates, students, alumni and individuals as well as local and international corporate bodies to support the donation culture for education in the university.
