Double happiness

KEGEMBIRAAN BERGANDA

Although his work as a special officer to His Royal Highness Sultan of Pahang kept him busy most of the time, it did not stop Ahmad Norbadelin Abdul Murad, 50, from completing his Executive Master in Project Management together with his beloved wife, Zuriati Hassan, also 50, who completed her Executive Master in Business Management.

Both Ahmad Norbadelin and Zuriati work at the same place – the Office of His Royal Highness of Sultan of Pahang, and both did their executive masters’ programme at UMP Advanced Education.

“I have long dreamed that one day, I will stand proud on the stage as a graduate.

“Alhamdullilah, our prayers have been answered and I shared the stage together with my wife,” he said.

Ahmad Norbadelin also said he had not expected to attend his own graduation this time around as prior to this, he had only come for official duties - which was to escort Sultan of Pahang.

Ahmad Norbadelin said he was fortunate enough to have his family’s support when he expressed his desire to continue studies.

He added that there were constraints and these were not so much due to their young children but more to the challenges of juggling his time between work and studies because his duties were not exactly the nine-to-five-kind of work.

He still recalled having to rush to attend classes in UMP, dressed in full traditional attire - the Baju Melayu, as he had straight away came from work.

As for Zuriati, she said age was not a factor for one to pursue their studies.

“At times, the atmosphere in the lecture room makes you very sprightly and positive, good vibes to see you through your studies.

“Although my classmates are around the age of my children, they are very supportive and readily share their knowledge with me.

“What is equally important is to focus in class and complete assignments within the given time,” she said.

For the couple, it was their most beautiful, memorable moment when they received their scrolls from His Royal Highness Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah Ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Al-Musta’in Billah during the university’s 14th convocation that was held recently.

Muhammad Nur Alif Re'dzuan, 24, quitted his job as a programmer and graphic designer in a company based in Cyberjaya to look after his father, Re'dzuan Yusof, 59, who underwent a brain surgery due to aneurysm last April. The story of this graduate of Bachelor of Computer Science (Software Engineering) went viral in social media.

“As the eldest of two, it is my responsibility to look after my father.

“Especially since our mother left us, my father had sacrificed a lot to take care of us.

“I still remember the words of my late mother during the registration day at UMP.

“She wanted to see me succeed and change the fate of our family.

“My father always encourages me to pursue my study even if my mother is no longer with us,” he said.

Holding to those words, he successfully completed his study and offered a position in a company in Cyberjaya.

But soon after, he was startled by the news that his father had a fever. His father’s high blood pressure had worsened, causing the blood vessel in his brain to enlarge.

After brain surgery, his father's worsening condition needed full-time care, and he decided to quit his job.

“It needs the patience to look after my father. Sometimes it requires two people to lift him during an appointment at the hospital because he currently uses a wheelchair,” he said.

He has to forget his wish to celebrate his graduation with his father and other family members and friends since his father’s condition did not allow him to be left behind.

However, his relatives were so adamant about seeing him receive the scroll during the 14th Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) Convocation Ceremony recently.

They even collected some money for him and took care of his father during the ceremony.

While other graduates attended the convocation with their families, Muhammad Nur Alif took a bus alone from Ipoh.

He was very grateful for his friend, Helmi Hanoin, who offered him to stay at his house before the ceremony.

Leveraging his expertise in graphic design, he is currently working on graphic design and multimedia at his house in Taman Malar Ulu Kinta, Perak.

At the same time, he is grateful for the assistance from the Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun Ipoh, Department of Social Welfare, Lembaga Zakat Perak and others.

“My father is now recovering and is undergoing physiotherapy treatment. I really hope he will recover soon.

“This situation is daunting, but I believe every cloud has a silver lining,” he said.

Celebrating success without loved ones is definitely sad. That is the feeling of Nur Shairah Yahya, a graduate of Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Pharmaceuticals) with Honours at the 14th UMP Convocation Ceremony on 16 November 2019 at Sports Complex, UMP Gambang Campus.

Nur Shairah, 23, said her late mother died in October last year due to a stomach problem that had lasted for several years.

“Since then, we depend solely on our father. Today, my father, Yahya Deraman is here to witness this great day together with my siblings.

“It is heartbroken to be reminded of my mother’s passing.

“But I know she would be the happiest person today to see this success,” she said.

To make things better, Nur Shairah was the recipient of Dato’ Majid Mohamad Manufacturing Engineering Technology (Pharmaceuticals) Excellence Award with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.77.

She added, “Mom really wanted to see me receive an award, but she did not get to see me wearing this convocation robe.

“However, I really feel her presence.

“I owe this success to my sacrifice for my mom when she was still around.

“Our success is not only because of our efforts and wisdom, but also thanks to those who shed tears praying for our success.”

Nur Shairah is currently living with her father and siblings. She intends to pursue her study in the field of pharmaceuticals and produces her own products.

Being a thousand miles apart from the Peninsula does not discourage Ts. Dr. Mohd Hafizil Mat Yasin to complete his part-time Doctor of Philosophy in Mechanical Engineering (Fuel Combustion) at the Faculty of Mechanical and Automotive Engineering Technology, Universiti of Malaysia Pahang (UMP).

Dr. Mohd Hafizil, who served as a lecturer in Terengganu at first, was reluctantly being transferred to Kota Kinabalu, but eventually, he accepted the reshuffle.

Unstoppable, he finally enrolled as a postgraduate student in the year-end 2014.

Adhering to the philosophy of 'It doesn't matter where you come from, what does matter is YOU', made him always focused on completing his four years’ study in UMP with total support from his beloved family.

"It undeniable hurtful upon receiving word that I had failed to obtain the Federal Training Gift (HLP), Ministry of Education Malaysia after going through the interview," he said.

However, the eldest of these six siblings eventually rose to continue his studies despite having to pay his expenses.

Through patience and perseverance, he eventually was offered as Industrial Lecturer Attachment (SIP) as a Research Assistant at a private company in Kota Kinabalu and had the opportunity to provide his engine test rig for fuel testing purposes.

According to him, UMP is a university under the Technical University of Malaysia Network (MTUN) with its mission and vision to meet the needs of Science, Management and Technical with staff and infrastructure capabilities and collaborate with world-class companies and institutions for current needs and communities locally.

Dr. Mohd. Hafizil also completed his part-time Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering at UMP.

He also expressed gratitude and especially thanks to his supervisor who kept him focused on his studies.

Dr. Mohd Hafizil will eventually return to the Peninsula after almost six years of living in Sabah.
