Nur Harizah and Chew Yee Ping receive University Gold Award
PAYA BESAR, 5 November 2022 – Two Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) graduands, Nur Harizah Mohd Nadzmi, 23 and Chew Yee Ping, 21 received the University Gold Award from the Pro-Chancellor, Tan Sri Dato’ Sri (Dr.) Abi Musa Asa’ari Mohemed Nor at the UMP 17th Convocation Ceremony held at the UMP Gambang Campus Sports Complex Hall.
Nur Harizah, a graduand of the Bachelor of Applied Science in Material Technology with Honours from the Faculty of Industrial Science and Technology (FSTI), obtained a CGPA of 3.83.
This Kuala Krai-born also received an FSTI Excellent Student Award and Dean’s List Award each semester.
She said her hard work paid off and she was proud to be able to make her parents happy through her outstanding success.
“This award is specially intended for my mother, Hawa, 58 and father Mohd Nadzmi, 57 and friends who prayed a lot, sacrificed and were willing to spend money to make sure I succeed in my study.
“When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, I was stressed by home-based learning which made me lose focus.
“Fortunately, I studied at home only for one semester and returned to campus because I needed to use the laboratory,” she said.
She said this success is also thanks to the guidance of UMP lecturers who are tireless in their teachings even though they are limited by distance and online classes.
At UMP, she held positions as Multimedia Exco and facilitator for the Saintis Turun ke Desa programme (2018), Exco for Demo Pendekar 3.0 for Martial Arts, volunteer for SUKFAC, community service volunteer for the Jom Masuk Kampung programme organised by Youth of Strength and Happiness (YOSH), and Logistic Exco for the 2nd International Elgineers Chess Championship.
This sixth of the eight siblings is fond of reading novels and listening to music.
She previously underwent industrial training (LI) at Balzers Optics Malaysia Sdn. Bhd., Seberang Perai, Pulai Pinang as Intern Production Engineer.
This visionary woman always has the goal of moving forward.
She said that the learning approach and curriculum content at UMP is very high quality and allow students to extensively choose the field of work they want to join.
“In fact, the delivery method in the lecture is also adequate and the facilities provided by UMP are also complete,” she said.
Another graduand of the Diploma of Mechanical Engineering, Chew Yee Ping, was proud when he realised his dream of receiving the diploma at this ceremony.
According to this Skudai-born lad, it was not easy for him to get the University Gold Award due to various problems while studying online during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Even though the teaching sessions were carried out online, I could still understand what UMP lecturers delivered.
“Learning during the COVID-19 pandemic was not easy; it required high discipline to stay focused during the lectures.
“Completing group assignments also became difficult because all information sharing could only be done through Google Meet and WhatsApp,” he said.
He, who holds to the principle of hard work and play hard, obtained a CGPA of 3.95 and is currently studying in the Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical-Materials) programme at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM).
This youngest child to Maria Glenda Tampon Alforque, 54 and Chew Boon Kiong, 54, also received the Dean’s List Award every semester.
He said that the family was his main advocate and motivator when he was stressed.
“They are always by my side and advise me a lot if I have problems that cannot be solved.
“Also, UMP lecturers always helped me and they are very qualified because they were willing to solve the problems faced by students,” he said, wishing to work in a multinational company after completing his study at UTM.
While studying at UMP, he was also active in co-curricular and association activities as Executive Unit Exco, Mandarin Language Society (MLS) (2000-2021), Logistics Unit Exco, Mandarin Language Society (MLS) (1999-2000) and Protocol Committee Member of the Sixth Lantern Festival.
The ceremony, which took place from 5 to 8 November, saw 4,535 degree and diploma students graduate in 2022.
They comprised 251 PhD and Master graduands and 3,065 undergraduate and diploma graduands.
Meanwhile, 1,219 UMP Advanced students also graduated.
