UMP-MOHE JAKM Outreach Programme focuses on Social Innovation and STEM

PEKAN, 28 October 2022 - The UMP-MOHE Outreach Programme through Jelajah Aspirasi Keluarga Malaysia (JAKM) Pahang 2022 recently welcomed students of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Indera Shahbandar (SMKIS) when 50 students had the opportunity to learn the basics of electricity and electronics by using interactive electronic blocks and building simple circuits of various applications.

A lecturer from the Faculty of Electrical & Electronic Engineering Technology (FTKEE), Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP), Dr. Abdul Nasir Abd Ghafar, who coordinated the programme, said it could foster creativity and innovation among rural communities, especially school students on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

“The emphasis in the STEM Programme is given to students of this school through the electrical and electronic basics guided by a group of lecturers.

“Students showed an interest in learning and raced to complete the tasks given,” he said.

Meanwhile, Cikgu Mohd Zaidi Awang Kechik, Head of Science and Mathematics at SMKIS, said he was grateful for the concern of MOHE and UMP to choose SMKIS students for the programme this time.

He hoped more such programs could be implemented to attract students to this STEM field.

Ahmad Khalid Mohd Tamzi, 15, initially thought completing an assignment would be difficult, but everything became easy when he started to understand the given assignment to solve it.

“In the learning sessions at school, we did study the theory on the basics of electrical circuits in Science and Design and Technology (RBT) subjects.

“However, we were able to gain a better understanding through this programme,” he said.

The programme organised by MOHE and UMP also held the Fertigation Programme with the community of Kampung Kiambang, Ganchong, Pekan as a result of the collaboration of the Industry and Community Collaboration Division (BKIM) in improving family social enterprises in line with socioeconomic sustainability.

It involved 4 locals from the B40 group and assisted by 20 UMP Volunteers.

It could raise the participants’ socioeconomic status to a better level through income generation from crop sales with an average of 25%-50% increase in income.

There was also a Mushroom Innovation Programme with asnaf, seniors and orphans at Rumah Anak Yatim Nur Iman Kempadang and Soya & Tau Fu Fa Production Course (LLL), Table Fan Repair Course (LLL), Motorcycle Service (CSR) and Mini Landscape – Stepping Stone (CSR) held by DPCCE at RTC Balairaya Kg. Bukit Sekilau.

Jelajah Aspirasi Keluarga Malaysia (AKM) was inaugurated by the Prime Minister of Malaysia, YAB Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob with various exciting programmes and activities provided to visitors at the Sultan Ahmad Shah International Convention Centre (SASICC) and at the Darul Makmur Stadium.

The Pahang JAKM programme which entered the 12th series was led by the Ministry of Defense (MINDEF) with the theme ‘Keluarga Malaysia is the Core of National Defense.’
