From failure to Dean’s List Award, Abdirahim Ali Hassan proves determination can change everything

GAMBANG, 21 October 2023 – Listed among students who might be terminated due to obtaining a low GPA during the first semester of study, Abdirahim Ali proved that with determination, everything can be changed.

The Bachelor of Computer Science (Computer Systems and Networking) graduand from Somaliland (Somalia) said that his journey in study was not an easy one.

“In my first year, I struggled academically and almost terminated.

“I also started my university journey with two other students from my home country.

“We were all excited to be at university and chasing our dreams,” he said.

However, he began to realise that the courses were more challenging than expected.

“We all struggled in the first semester, and my friends finally decided to stop studying.

“I also struggled, but I was determined to finish my study.

“I know that I have gone too far to give up.

“I started to work harder and study more efficiently and also asked for help from lecturers and other friends,” he said.

Despite going through a difficult start, Abdirahim was able to smile today because his winding journey finally paid off by obtaining the Dean’s List Award in the final semester of his study, thus qualifying him to be conferred in the Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah 18th Convocation Ceremony.

He added that a bad start does not always end badly.

“I believe the practical skills and knowledge I received from UMPSA are more valuable than the increase in CGPA.

“I learned how to think critically, solve problems and communicate effectively.

“I also got hands-on experience in my field of study,” he said.

He is also confident that the skills and knowledge gained at UMPSA will help him to succeed in his future career.

Abdirahman hopes that the story shared can inspire other students that nothing is impossible if we try as hard as possible.
