UMPSA receives the 2023 Low Carbon City Award
KUALA LUMPUR, 7 February 2023 - Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA) made history by receiving the 2023 Low Carbon City Award at the 2023 Malaysia Low Carbon City Award Ceremony.
This award recognizes the continuous efforts and commitment of Local Authorities (PBT) and organizations in developing sustainable and low-carbon urban development.
The UMPSA Pekan Campus was honoured with the Zone Category Diamond recognition for achieving a remarkable 38.34 percent reduction in Greenhouse Gas emissions, equivalent to 4,705.16 tCO2.
Meanwhile, the UMPSA Gambang Campus received the Partner Category Diamond Recognition for reducing Greenhouse Gas emissions by 20.66 percent, equivalent to 2,465.52 tCO2.
The ceremony was attended by Professor Datin Ts. Dr. Mimi Sakinah Abdul Munaim, Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Industry and Community Network), representing UMPSA's Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dato' Ts. Dr. Yuserrie Zainuddin.
The award was presented by the Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES), the Honourable Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.
Also present to receive the award was Tuan Syed Alwi Mohamed Sultan, Group Chief Executive Officer of the UMP Holdings Group, along with the Senior Director of the Centre for Strategic and Quality Management, Associate Professor Ts. Dr. Herma Dina Setiabudi.
According to UMPSA's Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dato' Ts. Dr. Yuserrie Zainuddin, UMPSA's participation in the zone category under the Pekan Town Council and Kuantan City Council in the Low Carbon City 2030 Challenge Programme (LCC 2030 Challenge) was approved during the Low Carbon City Initiative National Steering Committee Meeting No. 1/2024 on January 30, 2024.
"The LCC 2030 Challenge aims to reduce the overall carbon emissions intensity from cities across the country, aligning with the government's commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 45 percent by 2030.
“UMPSA proactively participated in this challenge for both campuses to ensure the university's growth aligns with government objectives," he stated.
Data preparation and transmission for the LCC 2030 Challenge is coordinated and managed by the Rating and Sustainability Division at the Strategic and Quality Management Centre (PPSK) for UMPSA Pekan, and the Environmental, Social & Governance Unit at UMP Holdings for UMPSA Gambang Campus.
The LCC 2030 Challenge is a new initiative aimed at accelerating the transformation of cities in Malaysia towards low-carbon cities.
GreenTech Malaysia will collaborate with the PBT to establish Low Carbon Zones in state capitals and major urban areas nationwide.
These zones will reduce emissions from energy and water use in buildings and public areas, as well as emissions from petrol, diesel vehicles, and landfill waste accumulation, supporting the country's aspiration to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
