UMP Kilau volunteers help East Coast flood relief

PEKAN, 21 December 2022 - Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) began mobilising East Coast Flood Volunteering Mission involving 20 UMP Kilau volunteers to lend a helping hand to flood victims in Kelantan and Terengganu.

Sympathised with the flood victims due to the Northeast Monsoon that is currently sweeping the states on the East Coast, the UMP Kilau volunteering mission brought food bags and Ready to Eat food packages prepared using retort technology under the food@campus initiative (UMP Campus Pantry) and Yayasan UMP in collaboration with the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE).

According to the UMP Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dato’ Ts. Dr. Yuserrie Zainuddin, in the first stage, 3,500 packs of ready-to-eat food would be distributed in stages.

“This contribution is to help flood victims, especially IPT students in both states including Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) Kubang Kerian, Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Machang, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA) and the surrounding IPTs.

“With the aim of Zero Hunger, the food prepared via the retort or sterilisation technology can last longer without affecting its structure and taste.

“This effort is in place during emergencies to enable students here to get healthy and ready-to-eat food,” he said.

He said this initiative was the collaboration between UMP and Yayasan UMP with the support of MOHE to enable students affected by the flood here to get food prepared using retort technology such as rice with chicken in sambal, meat in soy sauce and fried rice.
