Jothi Letchumy receives a scholarship to continue study in the UK

PEKAN, 26 July 2021 - A graduate of Bachelor of Mechatronic Engineering, Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP), Jothi Letchumy a/p Mahenda Kumar, 28, will be offered to pursue her study at the master’s level (MREs/Ph.D.) at Imperial College London, United Kingdom next October after receiving a scholarship for part of the fees and living allowance from Imperial College London.

Meanwhile, Yayasan Tunku Abdul Rahman (YTAR) will sponsor the remaining tuition fees.

According to Jothi, it was a mixed feeling of happiness worry when accepting the offer because considering the high tuition fee.

“I am not from a wealthy family. My father is just a government retiree who also bears the cost of my sister’s study in medicine and my younger brother, who is still studying at the diploma level.

“I am grateful for being able to continue my studies at the bachelor’s and master’s levels before this through a loan from the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN),” she said, who has lost his beloved mother since she was 15 years old.

She added that she was very grateful to the private companies that contributed to her funding to continue her study, especially to the Bangi Member of Parliament, Yang Berhormat Dr. Ong Kian Ming.

“I would also like to thank the UMP lecturer and my supervisor at the master’s degree (MSc), Dr. Anwar P.P. Abdul Majeed, who gave a lot of support and assistance throughout my study.

“This includes trying to get help from various parties to raise funds to finance my studies,” she said.

Jothi was offered to pursue her study for four years with the British Heart Foundation and the National Heart and Lung Institute (NHLI) Imperial College London, United Kingdom.

The study involves a one-year Master of Research programme in the field of cardiac and vascular medicine.

According to the Penangite, she did not think her dream would come true to improve her skills and knowledge in more advanced methods of diagnosing cardiovascular diseases.

She added that these methods and technologies are beneficial for the country in treating cardiovascular diseases through artificial intelligence and deep learning models.

“I will take this opportunity to improve the level of the medical system in Malaysia through the use of more advanced technology.

“Pray that I succeed in this field to serve the country in the future,” she said.

Cardiovascular disease is a condition that involves disorders of the heart and blood vessels that are now increasing and claiming many human lives.

She just completed a research mode master’s study (MSc) on deep learning.

During her five years of study at UMP, she was also active in research activities and often won awards in research competitions such as Robocon 2018, Creation, Innovation, Technology & Research Exposition (CITREx) 2018, 2019 and 2020, and Annual International Festival of Innovation on Green Technology (i-Finog) 2020.
